Apple’s September showcase always sets the agenda for the next year in mobile. This time, at the Glowtime event on 9 September, we got the iPhone 17 lineup, refreshed Apple Watches, and the latest AirPods Pro.

The headlines are all about sleek hardware, but for those of us building apps, the real question is: what do these changes mean for the way we design and develop digital products?

Let’s break it down.

iPhone 17 - Power moves to the mainstream

The iPhone 17 finally brings ProMotion’s 120Hz display to the standard model. Paired with Apple’s new A19 chip, it delivers smoother interactions, longer battery life, and on-device AI that doesn’t chew through power.

For app developers, this is big. It means buttery animations, richer AR, and more responsive interfaces can now reach a much broader audience, not just those who shell out for the Pro devices. Advanced features aren’t a “nice to have” anymore; they’re what users will expect.

iPhone Air - Slim, smart, and a bit tricky

Apple introduced the iPhone Air, its thinnest ever phone at just 5.6mm. It runs the A19 Pro chip and features a 6.5-inch ProMotion display, but the compact design raises fresh challenges. High-performance apps like games or AR tools may need smarter optimisation to avoid overheating on such slim hardware.

The eSIM-only design in certain regions is also worth watching. It opens new opportunities for travel and telecom apps, especially those helping users manage connectivity across borders without the faff of physical SIM cards.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max - Tools for creators

The Pro models raise the stakes with a triple-lens camera system, 8x optical zoom, ProRes RAW video support, and Apple’s new vapour chamber cooling for longer sustained performance. Battery life also jumps, with the Pro Max hitting up to 39 hours of video playback.

For developers, this hardware is a dream for creative apps. Professional-grade camera APIs open doors for advanced editing tools, media apps, and AR experiences that feel almost cinematic. These devices are redefining what users will expect apps to do straight out of the box.

iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence - The real game-changer

Alongside the hardware, iOS 26 introduced Apple Intelligence, a suite of on-device AI features that marks one of the biggest software shifts in years. The update includes generative tools for personalised content, Live Translation for real-time communication, context-aware search capabilities, and APIs that allow developers to integrate this intelligence directly into apps. Crucially, much of this processing happens privately on the device itself rather than relying on cloud servers.

This change is significant for app development. On-device AI allows for smarter, faster, and more secure user experiences that don’t compromise privacy, while reducing dependence on network connectivity. It creates opportunities for everything from real-time translation within messaging apps to advanced photo editing or contextual recommendations that work offline. Developers will need to explore how these tools can enhance their products while also considering the new power-management systems Apple has introduced.

Why it all matters

Apple’s Glowtime event was yet another leap in what users will expect from their devices, and by extension, their apps. ProMotion displays and faster chips mean smooth, high-performance experiences will become the new baseline. On-device AI opens the door to smarter, more private apps that don’t compromise on speed or security. And the growing ecosystem of devices means apps will need to work harder than ever to deliver seamless experiences across contexts.

For anyone building digital products, the message is clear: the bar just got higher. But for agencies like us, that’s the exciting part - new tools, new challenges, and new opportunities to build apps that don’t just keep up, but set the pace.
